We all have lives full of things we need to do and things we love to do: work, movies, doctor appointments, concerts, shopping, visits with friends and family – and transportation gets us there. Transportation is not an amenity, choice or courtesy, especially for individuals with developmental disabilities. For individuals with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, seizure disorders and other life-long conditions, transportation is a necessity. As such, Our Lady of the Wayside is working during the next 2 years to raise funding that will provide the agency with a 20% annual increase in new vehicles, additional drivers and staff to monitor consumers in-route.
Our Lady of the Wayside is unique in that it provides dedicated, handicapped accessible vehicles for each of its nearly 75 homes and many of its programs. Last year alone, The Wayside’s Transportation Program logged in 1.5 million miles with its 100 handicapped-accessible vans and vehicles. Every mile provided more than just an outing, it provided an opportunity: Transportation provides opportunities for family interaction, social contacts, economic independence, educational advancement and cultural enrichment … an opportunity to be a member of the community … an opportunity for a life well lived.
