Cupcake Cravings started just 4 years ago by Brenda Bals of Avon. Her grandmother, a chocolatier and baker, lived with her family growing up. After becoming a fan of the show Cupcake Wars, Brenda began to dabble in creating her own treats. Soon she was receiving referrals for orders of her gourmet filled cupcakes. Every cupcake is baked to order - nothing is ever frozen. With no storefront just yet, Brenda currently bakes all her orders at home. She recently participated at her first Wedding Expo and was able to book 3 weddings from it. Her business continues to grow and we are happy that she is bringing some of her delicious mini cupcakes to Grapes & Ale this Friday for our VIP guests! Flavors? Triple Chocolate, Strawberries & Cream, and Caramel Apple.

What started as a desire to do something different within the restaurant world in Lakewood has now become a go-to place to dine for Clevelanders and beyond. Owner Matt Fish wanted to create "...a bar and restaurant that I wanted to hang out at." and that's exactly what he did. Almost everyone is familiar with the grilled cheese sandwich. To some it's a comfort food, but to Matt, it's a concept that helped him launch the community that is Melt Bar & Grilled. After finishing culinary school the goal was to open up his own restaurant. While testing menus for a gastropub-type establishment, the idea for a little side menu with offerings of this staple sandwich kept resonating with a lot of people. From there Matt took it and ran. On September 22, 2006, the very first Melt opened its doors in Lakewood. Now almost 10 years later, their seventh location will be coming June of this year to Akron. The approach to take a plated entree and turn it into a sandwich has definitely built them a following. "We take that whole meal you're used to seeing and put it on the sandwich." - how awesome is that! A visit to Melt provides you with a unique experience combining fun gourmet food, cool atmosphere/music, and service levels that you won't find anywhere else. This will be Melt's first year participating at Grapes & Ale and we couldn't be more excited to have them. They are no stranger to Progressive Field, as the Right Field District is home to its very own Melt Bar & Grilled stand that went in with last year's ballpark renovations. This will allow Matt and his team to actually create sandwiches for guests using their own equipment available on site, something that usually is difficult to do at events. "It's going to be awesome, I'm really looking forward to it!" There's no doubt it will be a popular stop for those eager to taste samples of their gourmet grilled cheese at the event. Can't wait until next Friday? Stop at any one of their current locations to experience a fantastic meal and great staff! Tickets for Grapes & Ale are still available for purchase online at www.thewayside.org. If you're from Cleveland and love BBQ, then you know Hot Sauce Williams. We sat down to talk with Deborah Williams about this family business that began over 50 years ago. Created by her father and uncles from Mississippi, Deborah always knew she would eventually help run the restaurant. Her sister and cousin do most of the cooking while she handles a lot of the business side, which is what she went to school for. Current employees consist of family members and friends who have become like family. With a variety of delicious menu items, there is something for everyone. Their straight charcoal BBQ has now become quite popular here in our city. Even celebrities have stopped by to dine, including Robin Williams, Samuel L. Jackson and Adam Richman. Open 7 days a week except for 2 major holidays, Hot Sauce has a number of regulars dining in. "We know customers by name and their order." We are excited to have them back once again for Grapes & Ale. "Everyone wants to go, because it's lots of fun! We try and give as much back to the community. It's a good event for a good cause." They are definitely an event favorite and people are usually lining up to try their dish. What will they be cooking up this year? Pork shoulder, coleslaw and vegetarian baked beans - yum! On a Mission As a non-profit organization, The Wayside has a Mission Statement -- and a good one at that: Our Lady of the Wayside enriches the lives of individuals who have developmental disabilities. We provide individuals and their families pathways to healthy and productive personal growth through professional care and guidance. Wayside’s Mission Statement appropriately and importantly reminds us of who we are and where we came from, all while setting the bar high. More, it’s a promise to the children and adults with developmental disabilities Wayside serves – a promise fulfilled day-in-and-day-out by the 700 staff working for the agency. The vast majority of Wayside’s staff are Direct Service Professionals – DSP’s. Their work day starts out fairly average: get to work, punch the timeclock and roll up their sleeves. But from there, things get pretty extraordinary. The heart and soul of Wayside, DSP’s work directly with each and every one of the 700 children and adults we support. Cooking, driving and grocery shopping … bathing, changing and dosing medications … listening, redirecting and watching-like-a-hawk … DSP’s are helping hands, important advocates and the embodiment of promises kept. Direct. Service. Professional. When you think about it, it’s a pretty profound title with a job description that charges them with the responsibility of making life better for the people in their care. They’re on a mission alright … and on behalf of the individuals Our Lady of the Wayside supports, their families and the agency’s Board of Directors, I offer heartfelt appreciation, respect and thanks. ~Terry Davis President & CEO |
