Everyone had a fantastic experience playing and taking pictures with the Diamond Boys. Cleveland Indians Pitching Coach Mickey Callaway and his family even stopped by to meet everyone during lunch. A big thanks to partners The Cleveland Indians, Dream Days Ohio and The Diamond Boys for making this unforgettable day possible!
On August 3rd, participants from our Pathways Day Program had the opportunity to play some baseball right on the field! The Diamond Boys Baseball players set up stations around the field so participants could learn catching, pitching and hitting. Everyone enjoyed trying a new skill or brushing up on their game. It was an honor to practice on the same field where our first-place Indians play!

Opportunity....it's what we're about at The Wayside. It's why we partner with like-minded agencies like the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/ Deepwood. LCBDD’s mission is to advance public awareness and provide choices and opportunities to individuals with disabilities and they accomplish that by partnering with The Wayside and other providers. Wayside offers residential services (Wayside Homes) and transportation through LCBDD for individuals with disabilities in Lake County.
The LCBDD provides a wide range of services including: residential, adult, volunteer, employment and recreational services for individuals with disabilities. Soon we will be offering even more opportunities when our new Pathways Program location opens in Mentor! The Pathways Program is an adult day program offering community integration, social interaction and life skills through a variety of learning, outings and activities. The Mentor location will be Wayside's fourth site and our first location in Lake County. We are happy to be able to offer this innovative program to more individuals. To learn more about Pathways visit http://www.thewayside.org/, to learn more about LCBDD go tohttp://www.lakebdd.org/. "If Opportunity Doesn't Knock, Build a Door"-Milton Burle said it best and building doors is exactly what our Pathways Day Program is about. It expands community integration, creates opportunities, forms new skills, and builds friendships. Individuals in Pathways enjoy learning new skills such as banking, cooking, making crafts and gardening. Outings are the most popular and include trips like: the Metroparks, museums, concerts, bowling and the West Side Market just to name a few! Pathways has grown since its inception in 2011 and we are excited to build a fourth location in Mentor, Ohio. While we want to expand this program to as many individuals as possible the cost of tuition is $25,000 a year, an un-affordable sum for most. Waivers cover the cost for many current participants but the wait list for these waivers is long so in order to provide this program to more folks Wayside is creating Pathways Scholarships! These scholarships will allow those on the waiting list to take advantage of all of the opportunities the Pathways Program has to offer! We are happy to announce that the proceeds from our Starlight Luncheon on August 30th will not only go towards funding our newest Day Program location in Mentor (coming soon!), but also creating four Pathways Scholarships! We are thrilled to be able to welcome more individuals into this innovative program. For more information on the Pathways Program, how you can participate in the program or to attend the Starlight Luncheon please visit www.thewayside.org. Last week CEO Terry Davis was named part of the Smart 50 Class of 2016!Terry along with 49 other executives received his award at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven. It was wonderful to see many inspirational community leaders, such as Mayor Frank Jackson, Lee Fisher, Mike DeWine and Fred Koury come out to support the Smart 50 executives. The Smart 50 is presented by Smart Business and recognizes the top executives of the smartest companies in the region for their ability to effectively build and lead savvy organizations. Congratulations to Terry and the entire Smart 50 Class on this distinguished honor! Creating opportunities and opening doors is what we’re all about at The Wayside. One way we do that is through partnerships with agencies like the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities. They offer a variety of programs and services that the individuals we serve partake in. One of those individuals is Renee, who resides in a Wayside home and enjoys going to the Southwest Adult Activities Center each week at her job through SAW, Inc. assembling products for a local company. SAW, Inc., the nonprofit affiliate of the CCBDD, is one of the largest employers of individuals with disabilities in Ohio. Renee can also participate in the many activities SWAAC provides each week. Partnering with the CCBDD has allowed the individuals Wayside serves opportunities for employment, social interaction and greater participation in the community. To learn more about the CCBDD visit www.cuyahogabdd.org or at www.facebook.com\cuyahogabdd. There is always something exciting happening at The Wayside! We strive to open doors to create new opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Soon we will literally be "opening the doors" to our new Pathways Day Program in Mentor!
It may be under construction now, but soon the new Pathways will be filled with learning, social interaction, music, laughter and friendship. This new location will be the fourth site for our innovative Pathways Program and the first in Lake County, allowing us to offer more individuals life-enhancing opportunities. Established in 2011, Our Lady of the Wayside’s Pathways Program offers day services for adults with developmental disabilities with a focus on extending the range of community integration for participants through a variety of activities, learning and personal development. Participants can learn new skills such as cooking, crafts and exercise or go on a variety of community outings that combine learning and fun. Recent outings have been to the West Side Market, Pathways Garden, Metroparks and Kirtland Farm Park. The only program of its kind in the region, The Wayside defined a need for adult day programming that was activity-based. Pathways was created for individuals who flourish in an environment that provides more dedicated supervision and assistance than traditional day programs or workshop settings. Take a look at our pictures below for a sneak peak of the new site. Check back for more details and visit www.thewayside.org to learn about our other Pathways locations. On June 2nd we started providing transportation services in Geauga County! Wayside Ride is partnering with Geauga County to ensure safe, reliable transportation to clients served by the Geauga County Metzenbaum Center. We all have lives full of things we need to do and things we love to do: work, movies, doctor appointments, concerts, shopping, visits with friends and family – and transportation gets us there. Transportation is not an amenity, choice or courtesy, especially for individuals with developmental disabilities. For individuals with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, seizure disorders and other life-long conditions, transportation is a necessity. As such, Our Lady of the Wayside is working during the next 2 years to raise funding that will provide the agency with a 20% annual increase in new vehicles, additional drivers and staff to monitor consumers in-route. Our Lady of the Wayside is unique in that it provides dedicated, handicapped accessible vehicles for each of its nearly 75 homes and many of its programs. Last year alone, The Wayside’s Transportation Program logged in 1.5 million miles with its 100 handicapped-accessible vans and vehicles. Every mile provided more than just an outing, it provided an opportunity: Transportation provides opportunities for family interaction, social contacts, economic independence, educational advancement and cultural enrichment … an opportunity to be a member of the community … an opportunity for a life well lived. To learn more about Wayside's unique Transportation Program visit www.thewayside.org. Wayside Ride is fueled by our partner, Medical Mutual. Cupcake Cravings started just 4 years ago by Brenda Bals of Avon. Her grandmother, a chocolatier and baker, lived with her family growing up. After becoming a fan of the show Cupcake Wars, Brenda began to dabble in creating her own treats. Soon she was receiving referrals for orders of her gourmet filled cupcakes. Every cupcake is baked to order - nothing is ever frozen. With no storefront just yet, Brenda currently bakes all her orders at home. She recently participated at her first Wedding Expo and was able to book 3 weddings from it. Her business continues to grow and we are happy that she is bringing some of her delicious mini cupcakes to Grapes & Ale this Friday for our VIP guests! Flavors? Triple Chocolate, Strawberries & Cream, and Caramel Apple. Visit Cupcake Cravings' website for info on how you can have these treats at your next party or event. |
