They want to give a special thanks to Wayside staff, especially the maintenance crew, who helped make special modifications to the house to fit their needs, paint, install new appliances, help decorate and make their new home so inviting.
We know you have been just as excited as we have been waiting for Scott, Chris, Molly and Lisa to move into their new home! The day has finally arrived and everyone is thrilled to be in their new place! Like all Wayside houses it's designed for individual with disabilities but it's also comfortable, warm and feels just like home! Scott and Chris gave us a tour of their new home recently and talked about what they love the best and showed us their rooms. Chris loves the green paint, his comic book posters and his Sonic the Hedgehog bedspread. Scott loves his sports themed room with a special built in bookshelf to house all his favorite movies and photos. Molly and Lisa both like pink and each of their rooms reflect their own diva style. Everyone is excited that it is finally warmer outside so they can enjoy their lovely deck and backyard. Most of all Scott and Chris are excited that they get to live with their best friends, each other! They want to give a special thanks to Wayside staff, especially the maintenance crew, who helped make special modifications to the house to fit their needs, paint, install new appliances, help decorate and make their new home so inviting. Making a house a home for those with disabilities is a privilege an one we couldn't do without the wonderful support of our Board of Directors, friends and supporters. Thank you for making Scott, Chris, Molly and Lisa's dream come true!
A couple of weeks ago we introduced you to Scott and Chris who are excited to move into their own home with two other roomates in April. You may wonder where do we find all these homes? Our growing residential program provides neighborhood homes, just like yours, for individuals with disabilties. We have 53 homes in two counties and the program is growing! Each home not only provides a safe, comfortable space but also provides the support each individual needs. The Wayside beileves that independent living increases the quality of life for those with disabilities and create opportunities for them to achieve and accomplish their dreams.
So where do we get these homes? We had a chat with Charlie Smith, Director of Housing, about the amazing process of finding homes and fulfilling dreams. He explained that we find and develop homes around the needs of our residents and their families. Once the team finds a home, modifications are made. The special needs of our consumers require adaptable living spaces that include ramps, accessible bathrooms and other minor modifications. The housing team also updates the living space when needed with fresh paint, appliances, flooring, furnishings and landscaping. The residents are also part of the process, they get to choose their rooms, paint colors and decorations. Scott and Chris, have already visited their new home and picked out paint colors and decorations. Molly, one of their other roommates, has decided on pink for her room, because she said she is a "pink fanantic." Chris said he liked the new appliances in the kitchen and Scott is looking forward to enjoying the back porch this summer. Charlie said it's cool seeing the residents get excited and have their very own place. These homes and dreams would not be possible if not for the support of many partners and donors who help us create opportunities. Board members, the Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties Boards of Disabilities, Lorain National Bank, La-z-boy and many caring friends have been crucial to making these homes a reality. Thank you and check back for more updates on Chris and Scott's journey. Best friends. That’s what Scott and Chris are and just like best friends they have a lot in common: sports movies, comics and hanging out. They both like to goof off and both say they’ve been “silly since they were born.” Both attend the Pathways Day Program and like the excursions and computer class the program provides. Their favorites are summer outings to Cedar Point to ride roller coasters, the flea market and art shows. Now these two best friends are excited to have the opportunity to live together in their own home! Chris & Scott will be moving in April to a Wayside home in Berea with two other roommates, Lisa and Molly, and they can’t wait! The Wayside believes that each individual should have the right to choose where they want to live and our residential program allows people to do just that. With 53 homes in two counties, each Wayside home provides the opportunity to be a part of a family. Each home is modified for adaptability and provides daily support 24/7 by trained professionals. This allows each individual to reach their full potential and have greater independence. While Chris currently lives in a Wayside home, Scott lives at Guadalupe, a larger facility that The Wayside is committed to closing and relocating residents into smaller neighborhood homes. This will be Scott’s first home and he cannot wait! They recently got to tour the home and loved the stainless steel appliances in the kitchen and the back porch. Scott and Chris are deciding what color to paint their rooms and how to decorate. Chris is leaning towards green with superhero accessories while Scott likes blue for his room. They are also looking forward to having more house outings with their new roommates and more guys’ nights getting pizza while Lisa and Molly have their girls’ spa days. Check back soon as we update you on Chris & Scott's story and their new home! |
